This quartet of eminent LA hipsters have a matchless collective CV: Jeff Parker is best known as founder member of jazzy post-rockers Tortoise, Damion Reed has worked with everyone from Robert Glasper to Steve Colman to Rudresh Maranthappa, and Mohler himself is a real LA insider, with a cross-genre playing, writing and producing career involving too many genuine musical megastars to mention, alongside an enviable presence in the lucrative world of movie soundtracks.

He’s a jazzer at heart however, and continues to plough the furrow on this latest release, his third on Dayna Stevens’ Contagious imprint. It’s a punchy collection of tunes, all based around typically loping, off-kilter ostinatos from Mohler’s big toned bass, over which Parker and new kid on the block Devin Daniels drape modal melodies and furious solos while Reid drives things forward with his customary incendiary energy.

‘Sooner’ is a loose-limbed minor key blues that could have been written for a 1970s McCoy Tyner album: ‘No Age’ has a hip NYC straight 8s feel; ‘Hawk Wind’ and ‘Tsunami’ continue the theme with variations. Devin Daniels impresses as on his own 2024 release LesGo! with his acid penetrating tone, command of language and laser-focussed attack. There are solo bass interludes as well but it’s the band tracks that impress with their energy and commitment.
