If you thought this band’s debut, Stand Well Back, bursted with energy, then prepare for even more pyrotechnics from Towns’ extraordinary band. Six months in the making, an unheard of time in the ‘jazz world’, all that devotion pays off spectacularly. It’s not simply that the production values are high, with a multi-textured sound that makes this six-piece sound like a full on cinematic orchestra, but there’s a sense of flourish and an eye for detail that makes Drawing Breath more intriguing with every play.
Towns is of course the main man, with his time in film, theatre and big bands feeding into Drawing Breath’s vibrant sea changes. But Lockheart’s every note counts weightily, whether lyrical on ‘Heaven’ or blearily bluesy on the epic title track. Likewise the fearless Montague rises to every challenge Towns hurls at him, whether he’s rocking out on the aptly monikered ‘Attention Seeker’ or subtle and serpentine on the crazed magic of ‘Suddenly A Tango’. About the only caveat is that this band teems too much with ideas: how many paths does ‘Isadora’ need to follow in its 10-minute journey? But you can’t have too much of a good thing can you? Weill, Nucleus, Moroder, Zeppelin, Bill The Quill, they’re all in there somewhere: but most of all this is a band relishing its own verve, own confidence and own explosive talents.
