This release climaxes with the tune ‘Lookin’ Back’ and that’s exactly what this amalgam of fusion energy and smooth jazz does: it evokes a nostalgia for virtuosic jazz rock with some iconic names on board, but there’s little new to thrill to.

The prospect of McLaughlin and Ponty reunited on ‘World Turned Upside Down’ intrigues, but doesn’t ignite, while Randy Brecker’s contributions evoke funk fun days with his brother (especially on ‘Side Scratch’ alongside Ada Rovatti and Darryl Jones) but you’d do better listening to the real thing.

Dean Brown does his muscular rock out voicings throughout, doing his best to spark up the sometimes leaden grooves, but with smooth vox ballads like ‘Island Sun Love’ it’s hard not to hit skip. Harsh, maybe, and this genre of accomplished but hardly innovative revisiting has always had a constituency in North American markets. But given how young Brits like Flo Moore and Emma Rawicz relish edgier fusion grooves, this artery-thickening runout isn’t one you’d recommend, despite those starry guests.
