Not all leads stem from Dizzy Gillespie. Pre-bop there was a plethora of truly inspired trumpet players whose achievements are now becoming dimmed with the passing of time. So, let's hear it for Bobby Hackett! Among his many high spots he played the memorable solo on Glenn Miller's ‘A String Of Pearls’, helped to transform Tony Bennett's ‘The Very Thought Of You’ into a master class and recorded numerous best selling albums for Capitol that included Coast Concert, Gotham Jazz Scene, Jazz Ultimate and Jackie Gleason's Mood Music series. Blessed with an instantly recognisable crystal cut tone, Hackett may have been a Satchmo disciple, but added a timeless sensibility that wasn't out of place in any company. Here his matching with Zoot comes across as quite natural with both horn men appearing truly comfortable in one another's company (‘Bobby's Tune’, ‘Full Circle’, ‘Embraceable You’). Aside from Hackett and Sims, the star of the Creole Cookin' session is Bob Wilber who successfully modernised a dozen New Orleans classics without compromising the integrity of the originals especially when it comes to ‘Tin Roof Blues’, ‘Basin Street Blues’, ‘Fidgety Feet’ and ‘New Orleans’. One to definitely check out.
