Bobby Scott, who died in 1990 at the age of 53, may well be best remembered as the composer of ‘A Taste Of Honey’ and ‘He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother’, but he enjoyed a varied career, mainly as a reliable studio musician. Though only 17 and 18 years young when he recorded the three albums squeezed on to this single CD, Scott exhibited a maturity far beyond his years that revealed him to be more than just one of a pack of hungry young pianists all vying for attention. While influenced by Bud Powell, he wasn't locked into one specific genre and when tackling familiar works such as ‘Over The Rainbow’ or ‘Lullaby Of Birdland’ offered a fresh approach. Much the same applied to the handful of tracks where Scott switched to Bags-inspired vibraphone (‘What's New’, ‘Milt Shake’). Meanwhile nine of the 23 selections carry a Scott composer credit, with ‘Ode To Monk’ and ‘Two Toes’ among the most instant.
