Dr John was a self-confessed fan of Bobby Timmons who never got around to meeting BT or so he thought. Booked for a record date in New York, the line-up included a number of local keyboard players and it wasn't until the session was completed and the participants went their own way that the good Doctor found out that the player he had been seated next to for the whole time was none other than Timmons.
As things panned out, Philly-born Bobby Timmons is universally best remembered more for compositing durable soul jazz standards including ‘Moanin”, ‘This Here’ and ‘Dat Dere’ (all revisited here in trio format) rather than that of the gospel-informed pianist who was an integral part of both The Jazz Messengers (1958- 1961) and a much shorter stint with The Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Yet for all his success as a composer, here Timmons gives the impression of being far more at ease when tackling expressive standards as ‘I Thought About You’, ‘Ghost Of A Chance’ or a bebop classic ‘Groovin’ High' rather than his own money-spinners. Now, it's an often-repeated tale, but fame doesn't always bring any real stability to a young person's life, as shown by Timmons tragically drinking himself to death soon after his 38th birthday.
