These German doom-mongers are maestros of mood, their crepuscular adagios typically brooding combos of languorous piano, subtle moon-flecked percussion and sultry sax noir. On Patchouli Blue they have but tinkered with their tried-and-tested phantasmagoria, the old macabre lounge act remains soundtrack svelte, comparable to scores such as Vangelis’ Blade Runner, an obvious point of reference, and John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, particularly during ‘Vergessen & Vorbei’ with its retro synths and mechanised pulse. But Bohren are beginning to thaw, a definite smouldering already pronounced on 2015’s majestic Piano Nights. Drones luxuriate in lascivious heat, notes kindle like nocturnal passion. Hell’s foyer house band no longer, Bohren & der Club of Gore now deal in funeral marches for 1920s art-deco debauchees.
