The Serbian-born pianist/keyboardist Bojan Z and saxophonist Julien Lourau are both internationally acclaimed French-based jazz musicians sharing a background in high-velocity dance music forms. Lourau first attracted attention in the 1990s clubby Groove Gang while Z's roots are in Balkan rhythms and an interest in electric groove-jazz. As a duo they appeared at a jazz festival in Dudelange, Luxembourg earlier in the year and were less than the sum of their parts – Z is a formidable solo piano performer – but this live CD of originals, most of them written by the Franco-Serbian and recorded at jazz venue Le Triton in the Paris suburbs is at least a better indication of the electric chemistry between the pair. The music bristles with Bojan Z's galloping East European folk-infused melodies and funky Rhodes licks; Lourau matches him note for note in an effervescent dialogue of sax and keys even at slower tempos. But Duo also feels like two old friends coming together to strut their stuff. On the stage it makes more sense so it feels like one of those ‘live’ performances that perhaps should be left in the memory of those who were there at the time; it somehow just doesn't offer the same thrill when listened to out of context.
