Formerly and unwisely known as Jam Experiment, this quintet of long-time friends and collaborators thread concepts of comfort and home through their debut album. Home is certainly an invaluable, profound concept, but one superficially understood here as a happy place where bed awaits, letting unabashed positivity glow from Bonsai's music. Lyricist-singer Dominic Ingham's almost chorister-pure voice is integral to the downy, dreamy content of the title-track, a simple invitation to sleep repeated throughout. Rory Ingham (the 2017 British Jazz Awards' Rising Star) and Jonny Mansfield (winner of 2018's Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize) dominate ‘The Crescent’, Mansfield's hitched, drum'n'bass-style beats and Ingham's rough, hot trombone solo combining over faint Fender. ‘Hop – The Hip Replacement’ suggests, like their initial band-name, that humour and the English language aren't always their friends, though it's one of the album's more developed pieces Elsewhere, Bonsai's stated desire to make “accessible, inviting music” is met, and the musicians' loving pleasure in each others' playing is clear. But while hating to advocate discord and strife, some grit might help this happy band. Positivity wholly disconnected from pain can amount to a rictus grin.
