What a lovely title for a cracking set of covers reinterpreted with imagination and passion by a tight-knit, technically adroit trio taking on the legacy of the modern jazz masters. Leader Kozlov has long held the bass chair of the Mingus Big Band/Dynasty organisation, and is an in-demand Grammy-winning sideman, but rarely records under his own name. Here his gorgeous bowed bass is the lead voice on Ellington's ‘Prelude to a Kiss’, while Ornette Coleman's ‘Latin Genetics’ showcases Kozlov in fleet-fingered Haden mode. But for the most part he sits in the pocket of an impressively integrated trio, playing with the effortless joy of musicians clearly enjoying each other's company. Guitarist David Gilmore, probably best know for his work with Steve Coleman's Five Elements, delivers a clean-toned masterclass of pin-point timing and voicings rooted in the legacy of the great Jim Hall. While drummer Rudy Royston coaxes and cajoles without overstating his case. Monk's ‘Panonica’ and Hancock's ‘Eye of the Hurricane’ are well-known standards, but the CD opens in less-celebrated territory with a relaxed tempo-changing romp through Bill Evans' ‘Five’ followed by the twists and turns of Charles Mingus' ‘Conversation’. Wayne Shorter's ‘Orbits’ is an edgy workout set up by the thunder of Rudy Royston's drums. And the sprightly ‘Headless Blues’ is just that. And with each piece a gem of sparkling solos and filigree detail, it's already on this year's list of my top 10 CDs.
