Charette is an intriguing Hammond man. In recent years he’s mixed strings and electronics with the gruffer soul of the organ. But with Jackpot he’s gone back to the source and recorded an album of 100% hard swinging post-bop tunes redolent of Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff.
It helps of course, to have old buddies like Weeds and Cherry on board, the former being in a rich vein of form, whether channelling the soul-bop side of Coltrane on ‘Upstairs’ or easefully swinging through the long lines of ’Tight Connection’, a title which describes perfectly the groove this quartet sumptuously mines. But the ace card that brings it altogether is the addition of Bill Stewart. Jackpot is a Stewart masterclass, to the extent Charette reins himself in to give space to Stewart fills or indeed put him centre stage, as on the spectacular climaxes to ‘High Ball’ and ‘Vague Reply’ where the jackpot pays out big time.
