You might hear echoes of Tim Berne (whose pianist Matt Mitchell makes a noteworthy appearance here), Steve Coleman and Henry Threadgill in the work of young Chicagoan reedsman-composer Brian Krock. There are no easily won rewards here, but Krock's emerging personal signature is deft, complex and compelling.
