Seven musicians, playing seven pieces, all seven minutes long, sounds like a gimmick. Well, it is, but when the music is as well-played as this it hardly matters. Each tune was also inspired by events seven years apart in Lynch’s life, but what we have is a collective sound, a formula of head, bridge passages, and solos, but with some sections being constructed so they would fit in other pieces on the album. So, not least because the core of the ensemble has a long history of working together, the band has an immediately identifiable sound and personality.

Lynch and Handy phrase their lines in the heads as one, sometimes joined by Wintz, though sometimes his guitar intersperses comments. But when it comes to solos, each player is strong and individual. Koslov’s thoughtful bass ushers in Lynch’s sprightly trumpet on ‘Sympathetic Vibrations’, a title that might serve as an alternative title for the album. With a time limit on each piece, there’s no room for waffle and tight editorial control makes for a satisfying listen. Particularly enjoyable is the perky piece dedicated to Lynch’s dog, ‘Finnegan’s Garden’, with yet another strong solo from Lynch over a shifting rhythmic background, before Perdomo picks up some of the ideas for an elegant turn on piano. But for me the highlight is ‘The High Point of the Hang’ a serpentine but swinging head, after a bass intro, and then characteristically individual contributions from all the line-up.
