Best known for his latin jazz work with the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch comes up with another of his strictly straightahead dates dedicated to some of his trumpet heroes, figures he believes never really received the appreciation their talents deserved. Those he salutes on Volume 2 are Stanley's brother Tommy Turrentine, Joe Gordon, Louis Smith, Howard McGhee, Idrees Sulieman, Ira Sullivan and Donald Byrd (his dedication is a sort of rewrite of ‘Dear Old Stockholm’). Most of the songs are boppish melodies particularly those by Turrentine, Sulieman (much of whose work was captured on Bob Weinstock-produced Prestige blowing dates) and McGhee, whose ‘Sandy’ gets a totally alien free-form intro before the bop era line is stated. Lynch contributes two originals; one dedicated to Sullivan (featuring a romping piano solo by Rob Schneiderman, who used to churn out trio CDs on Reservoir) and the other to Smith, one of the Blue Note signings who never really caught on. Lynch solos soulfully on trumpet and – on the ballads (Gordon's ‘Heleen’, Turrentine's beautiful ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ an apt subtitle for the album and Sulieman's ‘Orange Blossom’) – on flugel. Herring also makes the most of his solo spots.
