Jimmy Smith may well have possessed the virtuosity but Screamin' Brother Jack McDuff oozed an abundance of gurgling fatback soul few could match. Subtlety wasn't really part of his vocabulary for like a jet fighter pilot, he'd come screamin' out of the clouds with the sun behind him (hence his nickname). As for the rest of the cast, Charlie Christianinspired guitarist Grant Green was already making a name for himself over at Blue Note. Lone horn player the vastly underrated tough tenor Harold Vick worked with almost all the headlining organists of the time as well as Dizzy, Aretha, Ray Charles plus undertaking movie work. Another tenor man who could also slug it out with the best of the rest was Jimmy Forrest, best known for his 1952 hit ‘Night Train’, a track that Sonny Liston used to warm up to before a prize fight. Finally, drummers Joe Dukes and Ben Dixon proved faultless throughout. The cherry on top was the fact that Rudy Van Gelder was at the controls as McDuff and associates confidently worked their way through a diverse program that embraced ‘Goodnight, It's Time To Go’, ‘A Smooth One’, a steaming ‘McDuff Speaking’, ‘I Want A Little Girl’, ‘The Honeydripper’ and Henry Mancini's ‘Mr. Lucky’. In all a perfect soundtrack for any Saturday Night Fish Fry.
