There's a bit of double-think going on this tribute disc to Bill Evans. German pianist Bruno Heinen appears to be the lead contributor but his playing is supplemented by, and interwoven with, the cool sound of London-based Danish guitarist Kristian Borring, and in the sleeve notes the album is dedicated to both Evans and Jim Hall. So is it actually a tribute album to Evans and Hall? Answers on a postcard (to Bill Evans)… Anyway, it's very good. The best-known Evans tunes have been tweaked in arrangement to provide an element of surprise (‘34 Skidoo’ comes back here as a delightfully poised ballad). ‘Interplay’ gives the pair an opportunity to demonstrate their musical empathy (very strong) while ‘Peri's Scope’ is delicately positioned at the intersection between swing and bop. Besides Evans originals, there's Heinen's self-penned title track and a closing rendition of Jerome Kern's ‘All the Things You Are’, much loved by Evans and recorded by the duo at the Vortex in London (it's a Babel release, after all).
