Mr. Vertigo is Heinen's sixth album for Oliver Weindling's Babel imprint, an exploration of solo piano counterpoint using subtle overdubs and a certain amount of after the fact rationalisation in post-production. Comprising seven originals plus ‘Virgo’ by Karlheinz Stockhausen, ‘The Peacocks’ by Jimmy Rowles and ‘Fire and Rain’ by James Taylor, this is undoubtedly Heinen's most ambitious project yet. On it he seeks to explore both improvisation and its implied counterpoint and if this sounds like a project dreamed up on a wet Sunday afternoon, in practice there are moments of genuine creativity and interest, such as ‘Virgo’, described as a duet with an original Stockhausen music box, or the intriguing ‘International Blues’. Ever since the 1960s, Wayne Shorter's composition's have provided inspiration for successive generations of jazz musicians, Heinen no exception, his ‘Daydreamer’ inspired by Shorter's ‘Night Dreamer’. The album's second track, ‘Hommage à Kurtág’ is a bit of a doze, but overall this is an album that speaks of the continuing evolution of a very promising pianist.
