When Bugge Wesseltoft was at the forefront of the ‘Nu-Jazz’ craze that swept Europe in the late 1990s and early millennium years, his music was always spontaneously conceived. What was remarkable was how he could get a whole nightclub up and dancing with his deft, understated yet infectious playing to a mixture of free jazz moments and open-ended improvisation over a tonal centre and beats. This freewheeling approach produced music that has not dated, as Somewhere In Between, an excellent anthology of his work from his New Jazz Conception – which actually lasted for 12 years – to the present day demonstrates. Wesseltoft has always been a sublime accompanist and his work in duo with vocalist Sidsel Endresen certainly produced some of the finest work in the singer's not inconsiderable discography. Yet he was equally at home accompanying the Sami singer Mari Boine, an exceptional and powerful artist whose live performances could be truly memorable. Wesseltoft's musical curiosity would take drive him to seek out other genres and musical collaborations as Bugge & Friends that might include a Joshua Redman, a Dhafer Youssef and an Erik Truffaz. As this 2CD set reveals, there is a lot more to Bugge Wesseltoft than meets the eye!
