Expanded to a quartet, with the addition of keyboardist David Wallumrød on Hammond and assorted vintage analogue hardware, Bushman's Revenge conjure their most epic tracks yet – and their most obvious homage to the grand ambitions of prog and cosmic jazz. Whereas past albums have included high-octane jazz-rock versions of compositions by artists as diverse as Black Sabbath and Ornette Coleman, here the Norwegian terror-unit eschew reinterpretations, instead weaving their influences into a suite of powerful originals. The 17-minute monster ‘Baklengs Inn I Fuglekassa’ dissolves from glowering, blues-rock crawl into a mirage of Indian shruti-drone with deep bass hook (offering a clear tip of the turban to Alice Coltrane), before rising up into a rousing, portentous theme that captures some of the majesty of Pink Floyd's ‘Echoes’. The 14-minute ‘Kugeln und Kraut’ is wrapped tight around a storming energy riff with organ power-chords, pile-driving drums and endless fretwork, suggesting some of the more mind-loosened early-1970s jams of Dutch proggers, Focus. Very nicely far out, indeed.
