From the moment the fat horn chords slide into Kendrick Lamar's soon-to-be-jazz-standard ‘How Much A Dollar Cost?’, it's clear Butcher Brown's new record has real depth. The Richmond, Virginia outfit has always had a taste for big grooves, but Triple Trey departs from the comfortable backbeats of previous album #KingButch and arrives at something much more profound.
The big new addition is the R4ND4ZZO BIGB4ND: tight, detailed and vibrant arrangements with all the heavy horn stylings of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble or Nubiyan Twist. As the project reaches its climax on the classic Notorious B.I.G. track ‘Unbelievable’, there's a comparison to prolific Dilla/Slum Village coverers Abstract Orchestra – imagine jazz rap, just with loads of instruments – but elsewhere, the originals maintain a freshness of feel, as the jaunty flow of Marcus ‘Tennishu’ Tenney clashes with the plush carpet of lower brass sound.
‘Liquid Light’ and ‘Cusian’ are standout tracks, with the irrepressible Corey Fonville on form throughout. A future live show with the whole ensemble is a tasty prospect indeed.
