This duet album by husband and wife duo Cæcilie Norby and Lars Danielsson presents an intimate, enigmatic and playful collection of 13 tracks. Framed by imaginative reworkings of two iconic songs, Joni Mitchell's ‘Both Sides Now’ and Leonard Cohen's ‘Hallelujah’, this is Danish vocalist Norby's third album for ACT following the classical stylings of Arabesque (2011) and her exploration of singer-songwriters in Silent Ways (2013). Two songs by one of Norby's touchstones, Abbey Lincoln, ‘And It's Supposed To Be Love’ and ‘Wholly Earth’, (which Norby recorded previously on Arabesque) are both standouts. Giving a nod to the classical reworkings of Arabesque, the Christmas hymn ‘Wondrous Story’ (Carl Nielsen's setting of words by Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig) is exceptionally beautiful, with Norby adding some ear-catching textural detail on the sansula, a type of kalimba (thumb piano). From the quietly dramatic ‘Liberetto Cantabile’, with its ghostly, atmospheric backdrop, to the supremely understated ‘Cherry Tree’, Norby and Danielsson's five co-written songs are marked out by their supreme melodicism and emotional directness.
