This is Norby’s second ACT album, and between them she has neatly encapsulated her formative influences. Daughter of a classical composer and an opera singer, Arabesque (2011) covered her classical upbringing as she provided her own lyrics for interpretations of her favourite classical pieces. Here, she speaks of being bowled over by rock music at the age of 14, so she revisits some of the songs that became part of her life, plus some originals for good measure. There is a chamber music quality to these pieces – even on Leonard Cohen’s ‘In My Secret Life’, Tom Waits’ ‘Diamonds and Gold’, Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ or John Fogerty’s ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain’. The nature of the transformations is mesmeric, each musician remaining within the orbit of the songs yet revealing glimpses of their own musical personalities. The glue that binds them all together is Norby’s voice – quite memorable. Once part of the Danish funk-jazz band Frontline, and part of a successful pop duo One Two, she was the first Scandinavian singer signed by Blue Note, and here she calls on these diverse musical experiences to create something special.
