Bona fide legends of Brazilian music, this 2CD set captures the sold-out world tour Veloso and Gil undertook, performing their own classic songs plus a sprinkling of other favourites across 21 countries. The pair have shared a lot of history together since first meeting in Salvador in the early 1960s, including being deported to London by the Brazilian military (recalled here in ‘Nine Out Of Ten’), and this is reflected in this beautiful recording. Featuring just two acoustic guitars and two voices although the duo are joined by the mellifluous backing singing of several thousand audience members on Gil’s ‘Expresso 2222’ the set opens with the snaking groove of ‘Back in Bahia’, the song penned by Gil upon his return to Brazil following his exile. Veloso’s ‘As Camélias do Quulimbo do Leblon’, with the two vocal lines locked together in perfect unison, is an especial delight. With other highlights including ‘Tropicália’ and ‘Toda Menina Baiana’, this is a glorious celebration of Brazilian music, the art of the singer- songwriter, and an enduring friendship.
