Born in Nigeria and of Afro-Caribbean heritage, Camilla George is in constant contact with all kinds of groove. Ibio-Ibio continues to celebrate her family's roots and the communities they are embedded in: ‘Ekpe’, for example, is dedicated to the secret society her grandfather was a member of, a council of elder statesmen called the Amama. Kadialy Kouyate's florid kora playing, plus titles like ‘Abasi’ (the Ibibio deity) and ‘isang’ (meaning journey) ground the music in a West African context, even if the resultant sound is more reflective of the celebrated London jazz sensibility, merging blues, hip-hop, and Afro-Caribbean soundworlds.
George will be familiar to readers as a long-time member of Jazz Jamaica, and as a key part of that London scene. A selection of her peer group features here, George forming a slick horn section with Sheila Maurice-Grey and Rosie Turton that's reminiscent of musical neighbours Kokoroko. George's bright and soulful playing is pleasing on the ear, and there's a starring role for Sarah Tandy, who contributes some far-reaching keys solos. The sound is reflective and groovy, the perfect place for Lady Sanity's jazzy flow (partnered with Pete Rock drummer Daru Jones). The Birmingham rapper is a great find, and one to watch.
