It's hard to add anything to the appraisal I gave this well-known Riverside session a few issues ago. Indeed, it's also a little hard to fathom why it's appeared so hot on the heels of that self same American Jazz Classics incarnation. Both share the (still incomprehensible) randomness we've come to expect from these mysterious Andorran labels, in this instance throwing in a clutch of bonus items that, besides the two alternate takes from the actual Adderley/Evans session (which surely aren't in the PD yet, since they weren't issued until much, much later) also include a couple of stray Evans-only tracks, added, one surmises, to give the listener an idea of how Bill played his themes without his frontline partner. Musically, what we get is a ‘classic’ set in every regard, Adderley's joyful ebullience tempered somewhat by Evans, who in turn sounds a great deal more outgoing than he would a few years hence. This match-up creates magical versions of ballads like ‘Nancy’ and ‘Goodbye’, but also digs in surprisingly hard on the other material, most notably Gershwin's ‘Who Cares?’ which contains a peach of a Cannonball solo. All in all, lovely stuff. But one wonders who'll buy it given that the ‘official’ Original Jazz Classics remaster is still available alongside this version and the AJC issue noted above. Maybe that's the schtick here; clever folks those Andorrans – they can sell you the same thing over and over and you don't get bored.
