Though his original two horns/three rhythm set-up served him well, Cannonball learned from his tour of duty with Miles that an extra horn can add a whole new dimension without cramping anyone's style, hence the presence here of Yusef Lateef (later replaced by Charles Lloyd). This 2CD set pulls together highlights from four Tokyo concerts and is proof positive that Cannonball and company neither short changed themselves or their audience. Inevitably, a good time was guaranteed for all. While around this time Cannonball was quite probably both the most consistent and influential post-Bird alto player on the block, let's also hear it for brother Nat. Much of Cannonball's success can be attributed to the choice of a repertoire that mainly originated from within the group, so step forward Nat whose two biggest compositions ‘Jive Samba’ and ‘Work Song’ are performed twice as is Oscar Pettiford's ‘Bohemia After Dark’. Furthermore, as a first class improviser Nat didn't exist in his brother's slipstream, coming across with a sparkling tone and a plethora of worthwhile ideas. Over the years much of Cannonball's extensive recorded output was taped on the job, and so those admirers familiar with the set list should take on board that along with In San Francisco and At The Lighthouse, this oriental delicacy amounts to one of this combo's most satisfying live sets.
