Although less well known than Billy Cobham, Carlos Garnett is the other Panamanian who came to prominence in the jazz world in the late 1960s, debuting with Freddie Hubbard before going on to establish himself as a leader who managed to blend the spirituality of Coltrane and the soulfulness of Stevie Wonder. In a manner not dissimilar to the early 1970s recordings of Norman Connors, Garnett wrote melodically rich material that was bolstered by some of the impassioned playing of his role model, and these three sets, with their rich orchestral palette, have a consistently high standard of performance throughout. It's difficult to choose a favourite but Let His Melody Ring On just about shades it for the skill with which the Caribbean flavours are infused. Incidentally 1976's Cosmos Nucleus might well be the recorded debut of a quite brilliant 21 year-old pianist by the name of Kenny Kirkland.
