Carsten Dahl is one of Denmark's leading jazz musicians, and he has a chest full of awards that Danish Grammies, the Django D'Or and the Jazzpar Award to prove it. Unlike the other Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden and Finland), Denmark has tended to be loyal to American hegemonic styles, showing less desire than their Nordic cousins to “localise” the music until recent years. Dahl's style remains firmly rooted in bebop and Bud Powell and Wynton Kelly, but here he leans towards a more discursive approach that embraces his free jazz inclinations (‘Stop One’, ‘Stop Two’) and open forms – ‘Psykocalypso’. Stepping outside his familiar trio configuration with the alto saxophonist Jesper Zeuthen he also shows a willingness to embrace “world” influences on Zeuthen's compositions ‘Andedans’ and ‘Okto’ to reveal another side of his still evolving musical personality.
