Just as Wilson's move to Blue Note records from JMT in 1993 saw her reinvent herself under the aegis of producer Craig Street with Blue Light Till Dawn, her move to Columbia Legacy and her collaboration with new producer Nick Launay sees her pull off the same remarkable feat of prestidigitation once more. Here she has selected 11 songs from the Billie Holiday ouvre and collaborated with her band on ‘Last Song (For Lester)’, a lament for Lester Young, whose enduring platonic relationship with Holiday was the stuff of jazz legend. Wilson overcomes the two main hurdles the Holiday repertoire poses for hommages such as this, namely the way in which songs associated with Holiday tend to swallow the identity of those who attempt to interpret them and making those songs, which come date-stamped in bygone era, appear relevant today. The way she achieves this speaks of her continuing growth and maturity as an artist – nothing sounds forced or artificial and the way her producer Nick Launay has tweaked the material with a contemporary underpin brings the very best out of a singer who has always had an ear for the past and an eye on the future.
