It's rather difficult to warm to the forbidding brand of avant-garde jazz offered by the Brooklyn-based, Canadian pianist Cat Toren's piano-reeds-drums (Yuma Uesaka on reeds, Colin Hinton on drums and percussion) trio in a recording split between sparsely atonal, contemporary classical chamber music and Tim Berne-influenced skronk-jazz.
