Vocalist Russell is the daughter of distinguished parents. Her father was pianist Luis Russell and her mother bassist/vocalist Carline Ray. Given these antecedents and her show-business background, it's no surprise perhaps that her sixth album for Jazz Village should see her tackling Harlem's rich musical heritage. Irving Berlin's title song is a slow groover, Mark Shane's expert stride piano to the fore, Russell's vocal sound warm and distinctive as she goes up through the gears, finishing with a flourish. ‘I Can't Believe’ swings as it should, Farber's arrangement for the full band moving delightfully and ‘Swing! Brother Swing!’ is an up-tempo romp, Alldred and Kellso featured, Russell's vocal stately and appropriately direct. Fats Waller's ‘Blue Turning Grey’ is, as ever, an exercise in calm order, Russell understated, Shane again prominent, Munisteri's guitar unhurried and fluent. The 100-year-old Staton (brother of the late Dakota) noodles nicely behind Russell on Henry Nemo's mellow ‘Don't Take Your Love From Me’, his presence a live connection to Harlem's heyday. Ms Russell is, as they used to say, the real deal, her performances here a conscious throwback to an earlier time, her musicians' responses to these great songs just right. Certainly soulful but never over-wrought, bluesy when she needs to be, Russell combines class with assurance. No wonder she's been garlanded with awards and prizes. Time she made it over here. This is a treat.
