Four master hard boppers who've all been there, done that and got their luggage filled with t-shirts! Of all the saxes, the baritone is arguably the most testing when it comes to creating an original and recognisable voice. Though he'd worked with many first generation beboppers, it was as an anchor man with Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band that Payne earned his stripes. Here ‘I Want To Talk About You’ is his standout performance. Duke Jordan's reputation as a first generation bopper (along with Bud Powell and Al Haig) was founded on his early work with the quintets of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and then Stan Getz and here he re-runs two of his most famous originals, the much-covered ‘Jordu” and ‘No Problem’, which he contributed to the soundtrack of the French movie, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Nothing earth-shattering occurs here, just four fine players doing what they do best.
