This recording from the winner of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, Cécile McLorin Salvant, is one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year. And rightly so. With a fascinating track list that ranges from the 19th century ballad ‘John Henry’ to the singer's own setting of Ida Salomon Flaubert's poetry, ‘Le Front Caché Sur Tes Genoux’, WomanChild is a completely self-assured and astonishingly mature statement. That the singer has immersed herself in the early jazz and blues vocal tradition is clear from the get-go, with a guitar/vocal take on ‘St Louis Gal’. And when was the last time you heard banjo on a vocal jazz album (a wonderful ‘Nobody’)? To hear how McLorin Salvant can reinvent a standard, head straight for ‘What A Little Moonlight Can Do’. The singer's excellent band features a brace of Mack Avenue labelmates, pianist Aaron Diehl and and bassist Rodney Whitaker, together with guitarist James Chirillo and drummer Herlin Riley.
