It’s good to report that Walton, at 77 years old a jazz veteran if ever there was one, has produced a new recording of high quality. His own inventive qualities are apparent throughout, whether playing a trio version of JJ Johnson’s ‘Lament’ or working with both horns on the title track, a new piece that moves well. Here, Walton is more spare, semi-Monkian if you like, building lines that unfurl pleasingly. Herring plays more tenor than alto and has a good, gritty sound, seemingly echoing the late James Moody rather than aping Coltrane. Turré, who appears on two tracks, is a tower of strength, his ribald, throaty tone and technique cleverly deployed. Herring is on flute for the slightly melancholic but pretty ‘Halo’ in waltz-time, his improvisation like a sweet balm. ‘Underground Memoirs’ has added percussion and is framed as a bossa, with muted Turré and some nicely balanced tenor. ‘Willie’s Groove’ is a neat trio thing, mostly for Jones, but with Williams’ pitter-patter bass fore-grounded, too. Walton is especially positive on this one. ‘Got To Get To The Island’, a Williams composition, with a lengthy run from the Herring alto, and a final, Silver-ish trio piece, with a long, knotty Walton solo, round out a joyous listening experience.
