Bookended by deeply swinging instrumental takes on two much beloved 1930s standards, ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’ and ‘Exactly Like You’, this loving tribute to the original ‘Big Band Canaries Who Soared’ is a varicoloured treasure trove of vocal jazz delights.
A song first introduced by Doris Day in the 1953 musical film, Calamity Jane, in which Day played the title role, NYC-based vocalist Vanessa Perea shines on ‘Secret Love’. Co-written Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour, another NYC-based vocalist, Olivia Chindamo, brilliantly navigates the melodic intricacies of ‘I Don’t Know Enough About You’.
Jane Monheit brings a wonderful sfumato quality to ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’, while Champian Fulton – performing a heroic quadruple shift as MD, co-producer, accompanist and vocalist – dusts down ‘All of Me’, a song first introduced in 1931 via the radio by vaudeville star Belle Baker. A featured vocalist with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, Carmen Bradford gives a glowing account of the Bernice Petkere/Joe Young standard, ‘Lullaby of the Leaves’ and a bouncy, energising take on ‘Tea for Two’. Other highlights include Chindamo’s rapid-fire scat on ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’, a magnificent ‘What A Difference A Day Makes’ from Fulton, plus Gretje Angell’s perfectly paced ‘You Belong to Me’. Bassists Neal Miner and Mike Gurrola and drummers Fukushi Tainaka and Charles Ruggiero play superbly throughout.
