This album contains nothing that hasn't been known to collectors for decades, but it has some glorious sections that transcend the varying sound quality of six different airshots. Specifically, the 1951 broadcast with Bud Powell and Roy Haynes that opens the batting here is at least as exciting as the famous Jazz At Massey Hall, with Parker's only known version of the Gillespie tune ‘Blue N' Boogie’ and an incredibly fast ‘Anthropology’ showing both hornmen on top form. Less celebrated, but equally stunning, is the 1945 sextet that Dizzy took to the West Coast, taking part in two radio shows and creating superior (and much longer) versions of their recent studio singles, such as ‘Groovin’ High' and ‘Shaw Nuff’. The connection with the Birdland venue obviously predates those “bonus tracks”, and doesn't apply to two items from Carnegie Hall featuring conguero Candido, while the other Birdland-performed items include Gillespie's R-n-B- influenced quintet with vocalist Joe Carroll (just a week after Massey Hall!) hosting sitters-in Parker and Miles.
