It’s only three years since the same label brought out a 2CD set of the complete Savoy master takes (EJC55676, including additional non-Savoy material), but clearly they’ve decided there’s extra mileage in combining Bird and Miles on the masthead. It’s a pity that – perhaps confused by the personnel listing on their previous set – they’ve omitted ‘Thrivin’ On A Riff’ (aka ‘Anthropology’) which has one of the earliest muted Miles solos. They do, however, include the ‘Milestones’ session led by Davis with Bird on tenor, and a couple of essential tracks where Davis lays out, the classic ‘Parker’s Mood’ plus ‘Meandering’ – but not its companion ‘Warming Up A Riff’, the quartet warm-up for ‘Ko-ko’. And, though there would have been ample room, ‘Ko-ko’ too is missing, doubtless because it had Gillespie on trumpet while Miles stood watching. There’s little you can say about these tracks that hasn’t been said already – even the fact that Max Roach was so significant to their success – but maybe the brevity of the review will leave more time for listening. Either for the first time if you need to catch up on this historic material, or to plumb the depths again if you thought you knew it already.
