For all you stargazers and UFO watchers out there scanning the heavens you might be interested to know that, in 1999, the asteroid 10426 Charlierouse was officially named in honour of Charlie Rouse. Now scroll back 40 years to 1959 when Rouse took over the tenor sax chair in Thelonious Monk's Quartet. Previously the domain of Johnny Griffin and John Coltrane, this could have turned out to be a poison chalice. But, contrary to the odds, Rouse remained until 1970. Apart from recording close to two dozen albums with Monk, he regularly recorded under his own leadership. Though Rouse's name seldom appears in the pantheon of great tenor sax stylists, it can't be ignored that he was an integral part of one of the most feted small groups in post-war modern jazz. This particular album has already done the rounds on a number of labels, but this time the original copyright holders have added a further three tracks (‘When Sunny Gets Blue’, ‘Quarter Moon’, ‘I Should Care’) which illustrate that Rouse had more in keeping with Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins than the legion of feisty hard boppers – perhaps that's what endeared Mr Rouse to Mr Monk!
