As is the modern way, this release was recorded in three different cities and cut and pasted together to create a moody, mysterious sound collage. The bottom line of the soundscapes is Cavallari's acoustic piano, which is imbued with a lyrical melancholy and a surprising subtlety that anchors the often-meandering electronics. Like the lift music to the most avant garde art show you never went to, the influences and effects are as allusive as they are elusive. ‘Pearls’ for example evokes a Dario Argento horror movie, deathly, dark and dreamsome, moving through ominous synth sounds that could've been sampled from a never-released Crims album; but then it morphs into ‘Ninth’ with a simple, seductive piano theme set against a scraped arco figure. ‘Aspekt’, in contrast, is their ‘Great Gig In The Sky’, its virtually transparent opening intro coalescing into an emotive vocalisation. In the right mood, the right place, Elec3Cities will intrigue; otherwise you may prefer to plunder the Nils Petter-Molvaer back catalogue.
