If you've been holding your breath since the Accident's last outing, you're doubtless a shade purple as six years have passed. But hopefully you've put off death. The band have been a loose amalgam of musicians for three decades but the core of Jones and Libersher remains consistent as does their extraordinary drawing together of various musics. For example, they can embrace a pop-rock vibe as on the the female-voiced, piano-led and bigged-up melancholia of ‘Immanence’. Yet whatever paths they lead us down can change in a handbrake turn. ‘Language Is’ butts and weaves all over the place, finally throwing us like flotsam on to a beach of peace: ‘Hymn’ is positively lyric, with a winsome piano, but we know it's going to morph sometime into a Ligeti scream, while ‘Wishful Breathing’ inhabits Can world circa 1970. Cuneiform deserves huge credit for backing bands like Cheer-Accident: cheery they may not be (and the album title sure ain't ironic), but the intent, commitment and musical integrity of Jones and Libersher is for sure no accident.
