Piero Umiliani! Who he? Seems he was an Italian pianist/composer whose main claim to fame was composing ‘Mah Na Nah Na’ that thoroughly irritating bit of nonsense that was made into an international phenomenon when performed by The Muppets! Though one of the very first local musicians to record bebop in post-war Italy, Umiliani earned his keep specialised in scoring for numerous Spaghetti Westerns, spy capers and soft porn while much later after his death, some of his music was used in Ocean's Twelve. However, along the way he encountered Mr. Chet and lured by a fistful of lira it seems appropriate that the star-crossed trumpet player should involve himself in playing on oftencheesy B-movie soundtracks. For the most part, Umiliani's derivative writing was highly evocative of what was being concocted on America's West Coast by the likes of Shorty Rogers, Pete Rugolo and their ilk. It needs to be pointed out that Chet didn't participate on every track of this intriguing 3CD release. But when summoned he proved to be alert, firm lipped and quite comfortable with the surroundings. Elsewhere, Chet croons sweetly on ‘Arrivederci’ leaving Helen Merrill to smoulder effectively on ‘Dawn’ and ‘Smog’. Unfortunately there are moments when local Neapolitan clichés can be detected along with some dated treble bass guitar twanging and rudimental psychedelic sci-fi sound effects. In conclusion this is definitely one for both ardent Chet collectors and those anoraks drawn to obscure 1960s Continental soundtracks.
