Chet Doxas, a young Brooklyn-based saxophonist, is of Canadian extraction, as are his quartet’s versatile bassist Zack Lober and guitarist Matthew Stevens, while drummer Eric Doob hails from Boston. Guitarist Stevens has the highest profile of the group, as a member of Esperanza Spalding’s Emily’s D+Evolution Band and after playing a pivotal role in the trumpeter Christian Scott’s series of cutting-edge recordings on the Concord label up until 2012. Stevens’ widescreen guitar-band rock influences are as well central to Rich In Symbols. The album title suggests a visual aspect to the music and though Doxas wrote the original tunes while sitting in front of Pop art works in galleries, he has also perhaps taken inspiration from saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his recent Bowie-inspired sound. Doxas is less voluble as a player though, his sax is song-like with free-jazz embellishments and his occasional synth pads expand the sonic canvas. But the aforementioned influences are evident in the album’s backbeat-driven (Doob is a forceful presence throughout) atmospheric post-1980s and alt.rock guitar-fuelled soundscapes. The more guilefully sophisticated, eclectically explosive elements however, found in McCaslin’s Bowie-songcraft or, for that matter, Christian Scott’s brooding mix of post-Miles jazz, hip hop and electronica is noticeably absent.
