Late flowering Corea is a wonder to behold. His technical facility, his unique vision and utter surety in his playing often scattered all before him, including the artistry of his colleagues. Indeed, he's just plain ‘frightening’ as Fleck himself notes in an aside on this double live CD. But now there's also a sense of space, even a lyrical vulnerability he'd never before allow himself. Which may be where Fleck comes in, one of the few artists able to match Corea's virtuosity and diverse musical roots. And of course Fleck's banjo with it's lack of sustain, naked tonality and harsh percussiveness can cajole, nark and at times seduce Corea into areas he'd rarely otherwise visit. Like fun. Most obviously the humour kicks in with a riotous ‘Bugle Call Rag’, but in the affable on-stage commentary there's a good humour that underwrites much of the music. So Fleck's ‘Waltz For Abby’, or the classically-voiced lullaby ‘Prelude En Berceuse’ are straight ahead gorgeous. There are moments they can't resist a bit of stunt showboating, as on the meanderings of ‘Menagerie’ but, hey, this is live and we all love a risky high wire act. Corea defaults to classic material of his own, a long solo intro to ‘Child Song 6’ and the inevitable but welcome ‘Armando's Rhumba’. But in the fresh contexts given by Fleck, even those old warhorses gallop with fresh zest.
