There's no shortage of compositions – not least ‘Spain’ – or albums by Chick Corea that reflect his love of Spanish music in particular and latin music in general, most recently the albums Touchstone and My Spanish Heart on the Concord label. Antidote makes it a trilogy, closer, perhaps in mood and conception to My Spanish Heart from 1976. Here Corea has gone for authenticity with Spanish musicians and the “fiery footwork” of Flamenco dancer Nino de los Rays. Revisiting material from My Spanish Heart (the title-track and ‘Armando's Rhumba’) and 1982's Touchstone (‘Duende’ and ‘Yellow Nimbus’), Corea also includes Stravinsky's ‘Pas De Deux’, ‘Zyryab’ by Paco de Lucia, ‘Desifinado’ by Antonio Carlos Jobim and two new originals – ‘Antidote’ and ‘Admiration’. There's a heavenly hosts intro from Gayle Moran's multi-tracked vocal on the intro of ‘My Spanish Heart’; a percussion dialogue between Quintero and the tap of Nino de los Rays; Spanish into Middle-Eastern influences on ‘Zyryab’; the alluring Brazilian samba/bossa influences on ‘Desifinado’ plus, a clever segue between Stravinsky's ‘Pas de Deux’ and Corea's ‘Admiration’ to round out proceedings. It's all a bit breathless, but hangs together thanks to Corea's creative imprimatur.
