The contemporary solo piano record could well be said to have begun with this 1971 album by Chick Corea for the ECM label, in its time hugely influential – ‘Song for Sally’, for example, would be picked up by Gary Burton and recorded as ‘Sea Journey’ with his quintet with Pat Metheny; ‘Sometime Ago’ would appear again in 1972 on Corea's exemplary Return to Forever debut album on ECM, while ‘Song of the Wind’ reappeared on Corea's IS sessions (last released on Blue Note). These compositions are followed on the record by the eight-part suite called ‘Where Are You Know’ where ‘Picture 4’ ultimately evolved into ‘What Games Shall We Play Today’ on the 1972 RTF debut. It's on this suite that Corea's remarkable melodic invention can be savoured – pure improvisations endowed with a persuasive melodic sense of construction that allows them to stand as compositions in their own right. One of the indispensable albums in the ECM corpus.
