These days we're familiar with the legacy of independent jazz labels like Strata East, but India Navigation remains a less well-known imprint. Between the 1970s and early-90s, the label released a respectable slew of albums – veering toward the avant garde – by the likes of Pharoah Sanders, David Murray and Leroy Jenkins. This one by Chico Freeman is a good example of a high quality release that's yet to make it to CD. ‘Look Up’ is turbulent, high-velocity freebop laced with Freeman's fleet-fingered multiphonic flights and some sleek sax/ vibes unison lines; ‘Minstrel's Sun Dance’ is a rolling, somewhat militaristic riff with Art Ensemble-style whistles, car horns and small percussion; the title track is a peaceful, African flavoured marimba jam; and ‘Illas’ is melodic modal jazz featuring Freeman's mellifluous flute. With joints of this calibre still languishing in the vaults, why not give today's musicians a year off while we catch up on the backlog?
