Truthfully, I have encountered all this material on one too many occasions and with few exceptions this 3CD sandwich hasn't worn well. ‘The Original Ellington Suite’ was initially dumped by producer and Pacific Jazz label owner Richard Bock who didn't warm to our man Dolphy and immediately re-recorded the project. It was only the chance discovery of an acetate at a boot sale that resulted in its release many years later. Fact is, this is still quite listenable, as are the half-dozen 1958 Newport Jazz Festival performances, though the adventurous nature of Dolphy's unique approach was still very much in the future. That was to materialise on Prestige Records New Jazz off-shoot. Here, the music still adheres to the polite neat and tidy chamber jazz formula which first attracted an audience. In time, the novelty wore quite thin, prompting Dolphy to seek more satisfying new directions and Hamilton to reinvent himself.
