Chiminyo is the alter ego of drummer/percussionist/producer and man about town Tim Doyle – he's been involved in hip and happening London acts Maisha and Cykada, and developed an innovative solo act using loops and triggers around his kit. Here he is with another conceptually interesting project: a series of monthly live jam sessions with a floating cast of participants, with the results of each edition to be released under the NRG banner.

The idea, as explained by the man himself, is to capture the essence of the young London scene - an idea of jazz that's less about the codified tradition and more about capturing the scene's spontaneity, youthful energy, and melting pot of urban influences. In practice this translates to long, harmonically static jams over urgent grooves derived from club styles like drum 'n' bass and grime: a sound and overall approach pioneered by Yussef Dayes, whose shadow looms large over this recording. Doyle can certainly deliver the goods as a drummer, from the frenetic junglism of ‘Purple/Green’ to the smooth R&B of ‘SLK’ and the wonky Dilla hip hop of ‘Krunk’ - Yelfris Valdés is a terrific trumpeter, and elevates proceedings whenever he plays, and the well chosen analogue washes of Amané Suganami set up a strong vibe throughout. The whoops and yells of the audience vividly capture how exciting it must have been to witness live in a crowded room: on record, and in the cold light of day, some listeners may find their attention starts to wander.
