The danger with any tribute album is that the dedicatee's personality and stature simply overwhelm the project. Happily, there's absolutely no hint of that with This One's For Dinah. From the get-go, a smoking ‘Fine Fine Daddy’, China Moses lights a fire under this homage to the Queen of The Blues, Dinah Washington.
The end result of a commission (‘Gardenias for Dinah’) by the director of the Nîmes Métropole Jazz Festival, Stéphane Kochoyan, the 13-track disc features urbane arrangements by pianist Raphaël Lemonnier and horn charts by trumpeter François Biensan. Moses demonstrates a strong affinity with the blues on the self-penned ‘Dinah's Blues’, exemplary timing on ‘Lover Come Back To Me’ and the ability to add a personal twist to even the most well-known standards such as ‘Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby’, Teach Me Tonight’ and ‘Cry Me A River’. Other big songs associated with Dinah, notably ‘Fat Daddy’ and ‘Evil Gal Blues’ (an early single), are performed with equal amounts of drama, passion and wit.
