Chris Morrissey is a young New York-based bassist originally from the Minnesota area with a circle of collaborators that that have included the Bad Plus drummer Dave King and the saxophonist Mike Lewis, band mates in the rock-influenced, pre-Bad Plus, Happy Apples. King produced this session and he is like a guarantor of a cool hip hop and grunge rock-fuelled dynamism at the bottom end. The line up also includes new ECM and Blue Note recording artist Aaron Parks on piano and the Brad Mehldau duo partner and Avishai Cohen ex-drumming sideman Mark Guiliana, a highly imaginative and energetic latin-fused polyrhythmic percussionist. While Morrissey's themes have a pastoral sometimes Beatles-like rock or country feel to them, at other times they echo the tangential bebop themes of Ornette Coleman.
